Jaw Line Reshaping / Masseter Reduction

A popular procedure at Skin Specifics. While a strong, square jaw line can be distinctly masculine and desirable in male patients, many female patients are seeking a softer more feminized shape to their face. Particularly in Asian females, changing the shape of the face from square to a more attractive oval shape can add a more gentle, graceful appearance. While surgery used to be the only option many young female patients do not feel up to the long recovery times and possible complications a surgical procedure may entail. Botox has taken a unique position for these patients who can achieve quite drastic results with much less risk. Besides a genetic predisposition overly chewing and grinding can cause the masseter muscle to enlarge and thus give a widened more masculine look to the face. Masseter reduction with Botox is a specialized technique where often a few rounds of Botox need to be injected over several weeks or months. Typically a patient will request their more masculine and wide jaw line be changed to a more oval, feminine shape. Botox selectively weakens the masseter muscle over time leading to an overall reduction in the size of this muscle.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long for results of Masseter Reduction?

Patients typically notice softening of the masseter muscle at one week and softening of the jaw line at 6 weeks. Some researchers have noticed “permanent changes” to the jaw line after 2-3 treatments. However, it is reasonable for patients to expect long-term benefit but not permanent changes.

What is Botox jaw reduction?

Botox jaw reduction is where Botulinum Toxin (aka Botox) is injected into the muscles of the jaw (called the masseter muscle) to reduce its size. In some ethnicities, patients have a tendency to develop overly square facial features. Botox can reduce the overall size of the masseter muscle, allowing for improved facial proportions in a noninvasive manner. Additionally it is known that Botox jaw reduction is actually one of the treatments for TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint) discomfort.

Can you experience any pain initially or days after the treatment?

Botox to the masseter muscle is almost a painless lunchtime procedure. The actual injection takes only a few minutes and you can go right back to work without anyone knowing you did anything.

How often and how many treatments do I need for jaw reshaping treatment with Botox?

After the initial treatment we like to have you return for a second treatment in 2-4 months, if you still would like further reshaping then more Botox is added. After you have got your second treatment most patients will not need additional treatments and can continue there repeat injections every 6 months or so.

How many units of Botox are used for jaw reduction?

There is no set number of units or dosage of Botox used for treating Masseter Hypertrophy. The average necessary for most patients is 25 units per side, with a great variation based on the size of the muscle. We will at least start with 10-15 units per side at Skin Specifics and have your return for a recheck.

Is it possible to reverse the results of jaw reduction?

Masseter reduction with Botox is when the Botox is injected directly into the muscle to reduce its size and force. As time goes on, the treated patient will be trained to not flex or use the masseter muscle with as much force. For these reasons, there is research to support that the effects of Botox jaw reduction will last long term.
